Tesla's Autopilot feature appears to have thus far reduced the number of crashes for consumers. However, today, consumers are typically vigilant about taking over control from Autopilot when necessary, and this surely contributes positively to Autopilot's overall impact on safety.

If Autopilot becomes so good in the near future that consumers actually stop paying attention, could the feature lead to greater risks?
