Auto manufacturing is known to be a poor business. Why is Tesla any different?

Conventional wisdom would say that automaking is a poor business. Many have gone bankrupt in the past, it is incredibly competitive, and companies have mediocre ROICs (Return on Invested Capital). Why would Tesla be any different?
